A Temporary Moratorium on Permanent School Closures

A Temporary Moratorium on Permanent School Closures

California is facing an “unprecedented” decline in student enrolment and the future of our schools is at stake. Unless we act now, our state’s bureaucrats will force us to permanently close even more of our beloved schools.

I propose an immediate statewide moratorium on school closures. California is facing declining a teacher shortage. Displaced teachers are are more likely to leave the profession. And displaced families are more likely to leave the public school system. Those who stay will face further burden.

School closure and declining enrollment must be studied and a comprehensive plan to save our schools must be enacted before any more children are displaced. The burden of school closures often disproportionately affect Black Students.
